Caterpillar Acquires Skycatch to Expand AI-Powered Mining Technology Platform

Caterpillar Buys Skycatch to Boost AI, Digital Twin and Automation Capabilities in Mining Operations

Caterpillar Inc. has acquired mining technology company Skycatch as part of its strategy to expand digital solutions, artificial intelligence capabilities and real-time data tools for mining operations.

The terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The acquisition follows Caterpillar’s recent purchase of RPMGlobal and strengthens its portfolio of mining technologies designed to improve operational efficiency, optimise material movement and support both conventional and autonomous mining fleets.

Skycatch specialises in capturing and processing high-resolution spatial data using artificial intelligence.

Its technology provides mine operators with near-real-time digital representations of mine sites, helping them monitor changing conditions, improve planning and make faster operational decisions.

Caterpillar said integrating Skycatch’s technology with its RPM and MineStar platforms will enhance the accuracy and availability of operational data, allowing mining companies to improve safety, productivity and overall site performance.

Denise Johnson, Caterpillar’s group president for Resource Industries, said the acquisition supports the company’s goal of helping customers address complex mining challenges through advanced technology and data-driven solutions.

Richard Mathews, CEO of RPMGlobal, said Skycatch’s platform enables mining companies to process large volumes of spatial information more efficiently, helping operators better connect mine planning with daily execution.

Skycatch founder and CEO Christian Sanz said the acquisition will expand the company’s ability to support customers while bringing its technology into a broader mining ecosystem.

The acquisition reflects the growing role of artificial intelligence, automation and digital twins in the mining industry as companies seek to improve efficiency, reduce operational risks and optimise resource management.
